Promising New Shoes – Altra Lone Peak and Brooks PureGrit Preview

There are a couple of new (Autumn 2011) trail running shoes that have caught my attention. At first glance, they look to incorporate good design and features for rugged trail running.

They are the Altra Lone Peak:

And the Brooks PureGrit:

They offer a great combination of a low heel or level sole along with enough cushioning to offer adequate protection for rugged rocky terrain. These are the exact qualities I look for in a shoe for the Ridge Run.

At this time, I have not tried or even seen either of these shoes as they are new models. I have run in the Altra Instinct which is Altra’s road shoe. They impress me, but their sole is nearly smooth and does not offer the grip required for the Ridge Run.

Check the Bozeman Running Company as they carry these brands and would be the first local shop to have these models. If you have any experience with either of these shoes, please comment.

I tried on a pair of the brooks puregrit today. they are in stock right now at Schness. BRC wont have them until the 1st of January they told me. I did not purchase them. they seemed good but there is a seam that rubs the top inside of the back of my heel weird. It felt like it would bug me or give me blisters there. which I have not had another shoe really feel like that to me. so I passed. you may want to check that area yourself to see if you notice it too before you purchase them. FYI the price on them was like $99 and change.

those pure grit look real nice. I think I will try a pair of those next year. I ran the ridge in the Brooks Adrenaline ASR7 last year and they worked great. those pure grit shoes look like they are about 3oz lighter than the ASRs but also look like the sole may have some cushion. If they fit anything like my other brooks they would be excellent shoes.
