Lottery Registration Dates Set

Just this week, Tom Hayes,  updated the Big Sky Wind Drinkers official Bridger Ridge Run web page. It now lists the dates of the registration for the lottery. Scroll down to find the section titled “2011 Race Info” on the wind drinker website. Here is a reiteration.

 Remember these dates:

  • Registration for the lottery begins Sunday May 15 at 8:00 AM Bozeman Time.
  • Registration for the lottery closes Sunday May 29 at 11:59 PM Bozeman Time.
  • Notification of lottery winners June 7 or 8 (tentative)
  • Lottery winners must register June 8 through June 15 (tentative)

As of January, the specifics on the dates of lottery winner notification on subsequent event registration are tentative, so check back.

Following are a couple issues that the wind drinker website does not clarify, but are very important.

You must do all the registration online and you must have a credit card to entery the lottery and register if you are a lottery winner. Also, all communication is by email. Lottery participants and winners must have a valid email address. It is your responsibility to check email and accept (not block as spam) email communications. If you are a lottery winner and fail to check your email an miss the subsequent registration for the event, then the race officials can only assume that you do not want to participate and you will miss your chance this year.

Another point of clarification is regarding online registration fees.

All registration for the lottery and the event is online at They charge a small fee. The lottery is $5.00, but will be around $6.55 with the online fee. For lottery winners, the entry fee is $50.00 and will be around $53.76 with the online fee.

I expect the race committee will eventually post an official rules and process of the lottery and event registration system so stayed tunned.

About the lottery system: I have just recently discovered trail running & racing & planned to do the Ridge Run this year, then I heard about the lottery! I hope that your selection system won’t discriminate against me because I haven’t run it before! It sounds like you plan on giving preference to those who have entered multiple times. In my opinion, it should be the other way around! Let others experience this amazing run! Thank you!!!

The specific rules for selection from the lottery are still coalescing. Once set, I plan to post them here for all to see.

What I do know at this time is that past winners and those who have done it 10 or more times will get in as long as they enter the lottery. These entries typically only represent about 10 to 20 people and have little impact on the selection process.

The other 280 will be selected randomly from the lottery entries with some discretion on the part of the selection committee. The “some discretion” is the fuzzy part of the criteria that is still being hammered out.

I do know, that the selection committee’s bias is towards those that are active members of the local running club. The selection committee also plans to give preference to those that had trouble getting in last year or the year before. During the sign up for the lottery, you will have the chance to submit a brief story as to why you should be selected. Compelling stories will certainly help.

My recommendations to help you get preference in the lottery are:

      • Join the local running club,, (it is only $10.0)
      • Participate in the running club events and get to know he club officers
      • Commit to helping put on the Ridge Run such as hauling water ahead of the event or being one of the trail maintenance volunteers

When you enter the lottery, write an honest and compelling story pleading your case as to why you should get in. Make sure to give yourself credit for any volunteer work you plan to do or have done in the past. Also mention any failed attempts to register in the past and any uniqueness that you bring to the event.

      Best of Success!
